The humongous problem of food waste and everything you need to know!

A few months ago, United Nations Environment Programme released the FOOD WASTE INDEX REPORT 2021 where they highlighted the global problem of food waste.

A major part of the global food waste is generated in households, the food service sector and retail stores. As per the report, globally, 931 million tonnes of food waste is generated every year. Household food waste contributes 61% that is 570 million tonnes of waste. The food service industry contributes 26%, and retail establishments contribute 13%.

On a global per capita level, 121 kgs of consumer-level food are wasted each year, of which 74 kg is at the household level alone. It is found that levels of household food waste are similar for high‑income, upper-middle-income and lower-middle-income countries.

Why should you be bothered?

  • The total food available for consumption is 5.3 Billion tonnes. 17.5% of it is thrown away as waste.

  • 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions are associated with food that is not consumed.

  • Over 820 million people go to bed on an empty stomach every night.

Wasting food is quite common, and it is a massive issue. Food wasted at the consumer level is often due to over-purchasing and over-preparing than necessary and, poor in-home storage. These items ultimately end up being in the trash cans instead of serving plates.

Governments all across the world encourage citizens to segregate food waste. Food waste rots faster and causes difficulty in processing if not done at the right time. Unlike other types of waste, food waste contains high water content (as high as 40%) and causes a foul smell and attracts disease-causing pests and rodents.

At Earthzy Technology Solutions, with our patented technology, the liquid part of food waste can be efficiently drained and separated, leaving behind only the solid part. This unique solid-liquid separation feature enables not only the reduction of the overall mass of waste but also foul odour and decay-causing moisture.

Using this technology, our patented product, RecycloBin, reduces the volume of food waste by six to ten times the original volume helping the process of recycling.
